VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - A new way of doing CPR appears to be saving more lives.

The BC Ambulance Service says survival rates for cardiac arrest have increased by 20% because of changes to how they perform CPR.

That amounts to 30 lives saved in a year.

Dr. Jim Christenson says part of the changes involve continuing CPR instead of stopping to give a breath or using defribulators, "It's better to do very good CPR for some period of time before we defribulate the heart and then the heart is more likely to be shocked into a normal rhythm."

Other changes involve getting dispatchers to instruct bystanders who call 911 on how to do CPR until paramedics arrive.
